How to Electronically Sign a PDF for Free Without Printing
Create or import a signature, place it on a compatible PDF, and save a signed copy in your browser without printing or scanning.

Too long to read?
- Choose an unlocked PDF up to 25 MB and 50 pages, then draw, type, or import your signature.
- Place and resize the signature on the correct page before selecting “Save signed PDF.”
- Reopen the downloaded copy to verify it; placing a signature image is different from certificate-based digital signing.
Sign the PDF in your browser
You can electronically sign a compatible PDF without printing it. In Inkrive, choose the PDF, draw, type, or import your signature, place it on the correct page, and save a new signed copy. The document is processed in your browser, and no account is required for this workflow.
Before you begin, make sure the PDF is unlocked, 25 MB or smaller, and no more than 50 pages. Keep the original file until you have reopened and checked the exported copy. If the PDF already contains a certificate-based digital signature or document restrictions, use an unrestricted, unsigned copy so the existing certification is not damaged.
1. Choose the PDF you want to sign
Open the Inkrive PDF signer and select Choose a PDF to sign. You can also drop the file into the upload area on a desktop browser.
Inkrive accepts PDF files. If your document is still in Word or Excel, export it as a PDF first. A password-protected, restricted, damaged, oversized, or unsupported PDF will produce an error instead of opening in the signing editor.
Once the file opens, check the filename and page count shown at the top of the editor. If you picked the wrong copy, select Choose another file before creating the signature.
2. Create or import your signature
The signing flow gives you three ways to make the visible signature:
- Draw: write with a mouse, finger, or pen. You can undo the last stroke or clear the drawing and start again.
- Type: enter your name, choose a handwriting style, and select black, blue, or indigo ink.
- Import: choose an existing PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. For a photo taken from paper, enable Remove light paper background and compare the prepared result before continuing.
Select Use this signature when the preview looks right. You can change it later without starting over with the PDF.
If you want a signature image to reuse outside this document, make and download a transparent PNG with the signature maker. If your handwriting is already on paper, the signature background remover can prepare that photo first.
3. Place the signature on the correct page
Use the page selector to open the page that needs your signature. Select Add signature, or tap the point on the document where you want it to appear.
After placing it, drag the signature into position. Select it to change its size or remove it. On a keyboard, you can use the arrow keys for smaller position adjustments. The editor also lets you switch between a whole-page view and a full-width view when you need a closer look.
For a multi-page document, move to another page and select Add signature again. Before saving, check the placement count and review every page where you added a signature. A signature that looks correctly sized on a zoomed page may feel too large beside the document text when you return to the whole-page view.
4. Save and verify the signed copy
Select Save signed PDF when each signature is on the intended page. Inkrive downloads a new file whose name ends in -signed.pdf; the original PDF is not changed.
Do not stop at the successful download message. Open the saved PDF and verify:
- the signature appears on the correct page;
- no part of it is clipped;
- the size and position still look right outside the editor;
- the rest of the document is present and readable; and
- you are sending or storing the signed copy rather than the original.
If you need to adjust the placement, return to the document, make the change, and save another copy.
Electronic signature image vs. digital signature
This workflow places a visible signature image on the PDF. It does not apply a certificate-based digital signature or preserve an existing signed certificate.
Those methods are not interchangeable. If a recipient, organization, or form requires a particular signing system, identity check, or certificate, confirm that requirement before using an image-based signature. Inkrive deliberately rejects PDFs that already contain a digital signature field so it does not silently alter a certified document.
Fix common signing problems
| Problem | What to check |
|---|---|
| The PDF will not open | Use an unlocked, unrestricted PDF no larger than 25 MB and 50 pages. Export a fresh PDF copy if the file is damaged or uses unsupported features. |
| The signature has a white box | Prepare the image as a transparent PNG with the background remover, then import it again. |
| The signature is on the wrong page | Return to the placement editor, remove it, choose the correct page, and add it again. |
| The signature is too large or small | Select the placed signature and adjust the Size control. Check it in the whole-page view. |
| Save signed PDF is unavailable | Add at least one signature and wait for the current page to finish rendering. |
| You need to rearrange the document first | Use the PDF organizer to reorder, rotate, or remove pages, then continue into signing. |
Your PDF contents and signature are processed locally in the browser. Website analytics are separate and record general usage events rather than the document or signature contents. Download the finished file before closing or refreshing the page; the signing session is not a cloud document library.
